Election News Round-up

-NUHW was certified by the Regional NLRB as the union for Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital! Congrats!

-Oh, not so fast, we're gonna drag this out, says the hospital--SRMH appeals to DC.

-St Louise workers choose SEIU 96 - NUHW 72. NUHW files charges about management interference in support of SEIU.

-Seems like NUHW might be on to something, because at O'Connor, another Daughter of Charities hospital down the street, the boss's behavior was so bad that the ballots were impounded (not counted) so that the board could investigate. But anyway, Tasty thought SEIU released these particular hospitals because they were going to annihilate NUHW at them....seems a little closer than they are hoping for. Maybe that is a reflection of their genius staff's ability to assess workers?

-Kaiser optical workers petitioned to decertify SEIU and join NUHW. Only 2 more units to go until all Kaiser workers are actively splitting from SEIU! Up next: the big 45,000 unit! How many Zombies will SEIU send in for that election?

-Maybe this charming anecdote, that a tipster sent in, gives us an idea of how things are going to be for Kaiser workers and patients during the Zombie invasion:

"Workers are reporting another of SEIU's "WWIII" incident that took place Thursday at Kaiser Modesto Medical Center, where SEIU recently sent a busload of 70 staff and lost-timers who literally swarmed through the hospital and caused staff to lock themselves inside offices and rooms. Today, SEIU sent 15 people who marched through the hallways chanting "God damned union territory." According to workers, the SEIU staffers almost knocked over a Kaiser patient in a wheelchair and sent other patients scrambling."

SEIU demands votes for workers who agree with SEIU, only.

The takes the cake.

It hasn't been picked up by any news media (as far as Tasty can tell), on Friday SEIU pulled its least honest move since the trusteeship itself. SEIU has apparently learned that the NLRB is getting ready to dismiss all of the bogus charges that SEIU has used for nearly a year to block elections for tens of thousands of California healthcare workers.

In an effort to try to dictate the schedule of the decert elections, Zombie UHW put out a press release announcing its willingness to drop the false charges at just 26 of the more than 100 facilities where workers are trying to leave SEIU/Zombie UHW.

Why 26? Well, SEIU only wants to drop the charges at facilities where they think they have a possibility of winning more than 13 votes! Even though these "blocking charges" are the same for every facility, they want to cherry-pick where the workers can vote. Coming off the heels of embarrassing loses at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and awaiting a loss with Southern California Kaiser Professionals. SEIU has to rely on the only approach that has worked so far: manipulating the weak NLRB.

The US Chamber of Commerce has long claimed that the NLRB is controlled by unions, and if the the NLRB in Oakland allows SEIU to manipulate the process and deny certain workers the right to vote--well Tasty thinks it will look like the Chamber was right! Not good for the labor movement, but what is new about that? Nada.

But take heart: the 26 facilities that SEIU has singled-out represent about 4,000 workers, or less than 10% of the 50,000 workers still waiting to vote out the Zombies. That means that SEIU knows that it has little chance of winning elections at more than 90% of the units. Now those are odds we can feel good about!

Mike Lauer...SRMH lead organizer, where are you now?

Tasty gets a lot of emails about SEIU staff, but workers and NUHW volunteers alike have been dropping hints about Mike Lauer for a while now...Mike led the fight at SRMH and is just another Scott Courtney/Dave Regan Ohioan.

But where is Mike post SRMH? Still going over the lists trying to find the extra 270 votes SEIU needs to tie that election up?

And who is Mike's special lady friend? Word has it that she is also a Zombie...Let me know at tastysternburger@gmail.com

UPDATE: Check out Adios Andy for Lauer update, seems he is in Salinas...still no positive ID on his lady friend.

Kaiser Ballots go out Today, RNs Vote Tomorrow and Thursday, Zombies swarm.

Which makes Tasty think....If SEIU sent a couple of hundred staff to Santa Rosa, and kept 40 (?) full time...and get 13 votes...how many Zombie will SEIU be sending to annoy Kaiser Professionals?

If they want to win, they need around 1200 votes. If 40=13 votes, then I guess we should plan on seeing around 3700 SEIU staffers in So Cal! Zombie-palooza!

Tasty is pretty sure that there are not even 3700 staff organizers in the UNITED STATES. So, Andy, if you can think of any other unions that still like SEIU, start dialing. You have a lot of borrowing to do!

Good Luck, Kaiser Workers.

The Boss files objections to SRMH election.

Gosh, SEIU is so busy being union busters that Tasty nearly forgot about the Boss! (Tasty wishes it were SEIU and the useless NLRB we could forget about, and go back to winning for workers against employers, but oh well!)

Well, at SRMH the boss has filed objections in an attempt to overturn the NUHW victory in the SRMH election.

SRMH vote results--NUHW beats SEIU by a landslide!

283 NUHW
263 No Union
13 SEIU

17 additional challenge ballots. These ballots are challenged based on hire date eligibility, i.e. were the workers there long enough to be able to vote. The hospital has agreed to share payroll records to settle the matter, SEIU has refused to move forward, as to stop the tally from being finalized tonight.

At this time, we do not know if NUHW wins with or without a runoff. But NUHW has kicked SEIU's ass seriously.

As of now, NUHW beats SEIU by 270 votes!

Election Updates

Just to keep you up to date, there is an election today and tomorrow at SRMH in Santa Rosa, and there is the upcoming de-certification vote beginning in early January for Kaiser Professionals in Southern California.

Remember, SRMH is a new unit, not a decert. So the boss and SEIU's anti-union messaging could confuse and intimidate workers into voting NO UNION. This would mean SEIU would have effectively screwed workers who have been working to organize here for 6 years. SEIU could have had an organizing agreement with SRMH pre-Trusteeship and refused it, so that the former UHW (current NUHW) leaders would not get credit for a victory.

It's outrageous. SEIU would much rather keep workers out of a union, than lose to NUHW. It's about SEIU, not about healthcare workers. There is no question.

Check out the current news articles, listen to the KPFA clip to hear from SRMH workers talk about the boss and SEIU's actions:

Los Angeles Times, "Hospital vote pits upstart union against colossus," 12-17-09

In These Times, "SEIU's Civil War," 12-16-09

Press Democrat

Labor Notes, "Finally, NUHW Squares Off Against SEIU in Two Hospital Elections," 12-16-09

Catholic San Francisco, "Santa Rosa election tests Catholic health care labor-management relations," 12-15-09

You can keep your money, SEIU.

Check out this video of SRMH workers watching the SEIU staff picket line from last week.

The workers who were laid off after Zombie UHW took over/shut down the campaign are featured. They don't seem too impressed.

Get out there and vote NUHW!

Andy says: Let them eat cake!

Check out the cakes that were delivered into numerous SRMH locations during the "picket" that SEIU staged outside. Word on the street says that SEIU bussed in 200 staff and supporters, but not one single SRMH worker came out to join them.

Not one? How many votes they lookin' to get? Oh, right. They just want to make sure that SRMH workers don't have any union!
